WASHINGTON—Highlights of the life of Paul Wolfowitz, whom President Bush nominated Wednesday to head the World Bank.

Title: Deputy defense secretary since March 2, 2001.

Age: 61, born Dec. 22, 1943.

Education: Bachelor's degree in mathematics, Cornell University, 1965. Doctorate in political science, University of Chicago, 1972.

Experience: Dean of international relations, School of Advanced International Studies, The Johns Hopkins University, 1994-2001; undersecretary of defense for policy, 1989-1993; U.S. ambassador to Indonesia, 1986-1989; assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, 1982-1986; head of State Department's policy planning staff, 1981-1982; deputy assistant secretary of defense for regional programs, 1977-1980; special assistant in strategic arms control negotiations, 1973-1977; professor, Yale University, 1970-1973

Reputation: Brainy neoconservative and avid hawk on national security who championed the Iraq war and President Bush's policy of pre-emptive intervention to disarm potential enemies. Believes the spread of democracy can change global politics profoundly.
