Knight Ridder honored for its veterans coverage

Knight Ridder Newspapers - Knight Ridder Newspapers

March 17, 2006 03:00 AM

WASHINGTON—The Knight Ridder Washington Bureau was cited Friday by the Heywood Broun Awards for its report on the poor treatment of America's veterans.

The Broun award, named for a founder of the Newspaper Guild, recognizes work that helps right a wrong or correct an injustice. Knight Ridder reporters Chris Adams and Alison Young were recognized for "Discharged and Dishonored," a series of stories that contest judges said "uncovered the many ways that American Iraq war veterans have been shortchanged or abandoned by the government that is supposed to care for them."

Top prize in the Broun competition went to Los Angeles Times reporters Matt Lait and Scott Glover for a report about a wrongly incarcerated man; they will receive $5,000. Knight Ridder received a Broun "award for distinction" and a $1,000 prize.

The veterans stories ran in more than 30 Knight Ridder papers, beginning in 2004 and continuing into 2005. The stories can be read at:
