Mac OS X only: Freeware app YemuZip is a graphical interface for creating zip files on the fly.
Create zip files using a drag and drop with YemuZip. Before creating the zip archive, YemuZip forces you to choose whether to create the file in "PC compatible" or "Mac specific" modes. (The Mac format will maintain the integrity of your metadata.) But don't worry, the files created using PC compatibility mode are totally compatible with your Mac, too. If YemuZip isn't for you, you can always create zip folders using a single keystroke. Yemuzip is a free download for Mac only at http://www.yellowmug.com/yemuzip/.
