Former Rep. Vic Kohring said today that he will plead guilty to a federal charge of conspiring to extort the now defunct oil-field service company Veco Inc.
A trial on that charge, along with bribery and another extortion count, had been scheduled to begin in federal court in Fairbanks Oct. 31. Instead, Kohring, a Republican from Wasilla who last served in the Legislature in 2007, will face sentencing Friday.
An Anchorage jury convicted Kohring of those charges in 2007 and he was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison, but his conviction was overturned on appeal. Federal prosecutors had been planning to go ahead with his retrial.
