WASHINGTON—Knight Ridder's investigation of the government's treatment of veterans received an award for best Washington reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists, it was announced Friday.
"Discharged and Dishonored," by Chris Adams and Alison Young of the Washington bureau was one of the recipients of the 2005 Sigma Delta Chi Awards for excellence in journalism.
The award was one of 15 given to newspapers and wire services nationally for news, feature, foreign and investigative reporting. There were more than 1,200 entries in print, radio, television and online.
The Society of Professional Journalists is an Indianapolis-based national group of journalism educators, journalists and other supporters of free speech and ethics in journalism. Its award program began in 1939.
The veterans' stories ran in Knight Ridder papers beginning in 2004 and continuing into 2005.
