TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. — A 52-year-old woman convicted of running a high-end Washington prostitution ring that snagged Republican Sen. David Vitter killed herself Thursday, police said, two weeks after her trial ended.
The body of Deborah Jeane Palfrey, who'd vowed that she would never go to prison, was found in a shed near her mother's manufactured home about 20 miles northwest of Tampa. Police said that she left a suicide note. She'd hanged herself from the shed's ceiling with nylon rope.
Palfrey was convicted April 15 by a federal jury of running a prostitution service that catered to members of Washington's political elite. She'd denied her escort service engaged in prostitution, saying that if any of the women engaged in sex acts for money, they did so without her knowledge.
