Mitch McConnell raises record $3 million for campaign

Jack Brammer - Lexington Herald-Leader

July 10, 2008 07:13 PM

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell's re-election campaign is reporting that it raised more than $3 million during the second quarter of this year, a record for any federal candidate in Kentucky's history.

The campaign said it has raised more than $15 million and has more than $9 million on hand for the November general election. McConnell, a Louisville Republican, is being challenged by Democrat Bruce Lunsford of Louisville.

His campaign said it will file its complete campaign finance report with the Federal Election Commission on July 15.

Allison Haley, press secretary for Lunsford's campaign, said in a statement, "It must be easy to rake in special interest cash when you've been doing their bidding for 24 years in the Senate.

"The big oil companies alone have given McConnell over $650,000 in campaign contributions over the years. Kentucky cannot afford another six years of McConnell's misplaced loyalties. He is not on our side. It's time for change."

"I am humbled by the outpouring of support from Kentuckians and people across the country," McConnell said in a statement. "I plan to run a vigorous campaign and we will have the resources to deliver a convincing message to Kentuckians this fall."

On May 15, the McConnell Senate Committee reported raising over $850,000 during April. During May and June, McConnell raised over $2.16 million for a second quarter total surpassing $3 million.

"Bruce Lunsford and his allies like the Sierra Club, Americans United for Change, and other liberal organizations are already running a negative campaign devoid of any positive agenda for Kentucky," McConnell campaign manager Justin Brasell said in a statement. "We will have the resources we need to get our message out, and we won't be shy about responding to Lunsford and his liberal friends' false attacks."
