WASHINGTON — Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz sprained her ankle and broke her leg sliding into second at a charity softball game late Tuesday. But she didn't miss a previously scheduled meeting at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, nor did she skip votes.
That tenacity is becoming a hallmark for the Florida Democrat, who in March revealed that she had privately battled breast cancer in 2008 while continuing her work as a congresswoman and high-ranking Democrat.
"She is doing well and is in good spirits,'' spokesman Jonathan Beeton said Wednesday, adding that Wasserman Schultz "would like to stress that she was safe at second.''
Wasserman Schultz helped organize the first-ever Congressional Women's Softball Game after her breast cancer diagnosis. Proceeds were to benefit the Young Survival Coalition, which champions breast cancer care and education for women 40 and under diagnosed with breast cancer.
The congressional team lost 14-8 to Capitol Hill staffers, but Wasserman Schultz did get a flower delivery from Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Mo., her team's co-captain, Beeton said.
Wasserman Schultz stuck it out for the entire game — and the post-game festivities — with the Washington Post noting that she "took the mike to cheer the spirit of bipartisanship and the final fundraising take of $40,000 — before she was whisked into an ambulance.''
Beeton said Wasserman Schultz is coping with a soft cast and crutches and is due at the doctor for a follow-up.
