Tom Watson's captivating, age-defying, history-challenging run at the British Open stretched all the way to a four-hole playoff today at Turnberry Golf Club in Scotland.
All it lacked was the fairy-tale ending.
Watson, the 59-year-old Kansas City legend vying to become the oldest golfer to ever win a major championship, settled for second place as Stewart Cink claimed his first career major title.
Watson came close, though.
The talk of the tournament all weekend, Watson missed a par putt from within about 10 feet on the 18th hole that would have won him the championship.
Instead, with a bogey on 18, he finished the first 72 holes in a tie at 2 under par with Cink, setting up the playoff.
Cink would take it from there, posting two pars and two birdies on the four extra holes to win his first major while Watson struggled with a bogey on the first playoff hole (No. 5), a double bogey on the third playoff hole (No.17) and a final bogey back on No. 18.
For most of the day, though, it was Watson’s steady play that kept him in contention while challengers came and went.
