WICHITA — Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Etheridge was ambushed by a man hiding in the backyard of his house, Sheriff Robert Hinshaw said today.
Etheridge was shot twice Monday about noon while answering a call about a reported larceny at 3606 S. Rock Road.
Hinshaw said Richard L. Lyons, 27, was waiting in the backyard when Etheridge arrived. He said Etheridge knocked on the door and then called dispatchers when he got no answer, asking whether there was contact information from the caller.
He walked around to the back of the house and then was returning to the front of the house when he was shot, Hinshaw said. He said Lyons was concealed in some trees and brush. He said authorities found a cache of ammunition there.
Hinshaw said Etheridge was shot in the back, and the bullet pierced his body armor. He said Lyons tried to shoot him again from close range but his rifle jammed. Hinshaw said Lyons used Etheridge's service weapon to shoot him in the leg.
