The line in the sand has become literal.
Several hundred people gathered Saturday afternoon along the sands of South Beach opposite Ocean Drive in support of clean beaches and clean air.
“The point is to draw a line in the sand against off-shore drilling and for clean energy,” said Katie Parrish, an Oceania campaign organizer at one popular spot, Miami Beach between Lummus and Marjory Stoneman Douglas Ocean Beach Park . “It’s a symbolic line to send a message to our political officials to take action against expanded off-shore drilling.”
They gathered in support of Hands Across The Sand, a national grassroots movement that started in October 2009 and first appeared in Florida in February 2010 to support environmentally-conscious energy. The last gathering occurred June 26, just 11 days after British Petroleum capped its Deepwater Horizon rig to stop crude from spilling into the Gulf of Mexico.
