DURHAM, N.C. — Investigators and police swarmed the woods of a popular city river park Sunday night after a hiker found human remains there, Durham police said.
The clothed but badly deteriorated remains were found deep in the woods of West Point on the Eno city park, away from the network of trails that crisscross the forest, Durham Police Sgt. Dale Gunter said.
"These are human remains, very decomposed and in a very secluded area," he said.
Police said the hiker flagged a patrol officer about 6 p.m. and reported the discovery. Investigators have yet to determine age, race, sex or cause of death, said Durham Police Watch Cmdr. W.G. Johnson, who added that the remains may have been in the woods for a significant length of time.
