Citing information from a two-day News-Democrat series about conditions at the Tamms supermax prison, an expert on the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and the military prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, said Tuesday that prisoners at all three locations exhibit symptoms of torture.
A protest, prompted in part by the articles, is set for Thursday when representatives from as many as 70 community organizations, including the Tamms Year Ten Committee, will stage a "call in" to the office of Gov. Pat Quinn.
And a local state representative has urged Quinn to order a review of the operation of the prison.
The callers will urge the governor to ease conditions at the Tamms Correctional Center in Alexander County, including ending indefinite solitary confinement. Organizers of the call-in said participants will repeatedly call the governor's office throughout the day.
A spokesman at the Illinois Department of Corrections did not respond to a request Tuesday for comment about the protest or allegations of inmate mistreatment.
