When family members found 1-year-old Giselle Gomez on Wednesday in a parked car near Belleville, Ill., the infant was unresponsive, wasn't breathing and had heat blisters covering her entire body, police said.
The car had been parked and left running for more than an hour in front of UC Insurance at 2919 South Belt West.
"I've never seen a case like this," St. Clair County Sheriff's Department Capt. Steve Johnson said. "I've seen a lot of children left in cars for a long time, but I've never, never seen blisters like this."
The family member who left the infant and the infant's 2 1/2 -year-old sister in the running car is in police custody at the St. Clair County Jail. The family member's name or relation to the child has not been made public by the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department because she has not yet been charged, Johnson said Thursday afternoon.
An autopsy Thursday morning determined Giselle died from hyperthermia due to extreme heat, Johnson said.
