Bad morning at Texas Walmart, and, yes, alcohol involved

Deanna Boyd - Fort Worth Star-Telegram

August 20, 2009 02:11 PM

FORT WORTH — A man suspected of being drunk drove his car into an east Fort Worth Walmart Thursday morning before jumping into the bed of a passing pickup in an apparent attempt to escape, police said.

The pickup's driver, afraid he was about to be carjacked, then struck three or four cars in the parking lot trying to remove the man from his truck, police said.

The incident happened about 8:15 a.m. at the Walmart at 8401 Anderson Blvd., near Interstate 30 and Eastchase Parkway.

Sgt. Pedro Criado, a police spokesman, said witnesses reported seeing a man driving erratically in the parking lot, including doing donuts, before crashing through the store’s glass doors.

A Walmart greeter was injured in the incident but her injuries were not believed to be serious, Criado said.

The driver then got out of his car, ran back outside and jumped into the bed of a passing pickup, Criado said.

He said the pickup’s driver, afraid he was about to be carjacked, then struck three or four cars in the parking lot while “trying to dislodge him out of the bed of the pickup.”

The man suspected of being drunk was arrested at the scene and taken to a local hospital to have blood drawn.
