NAPA, Calif. — The Napa Police Department on Friday announced it was reopening its investigation into the matter of Raiders assistant coach Randy Hanson, who says his jaw was broken by a team staff member earlier this month.
In a press release issued by the department, the Napa police said the case was reopened because "new information has come to light."
That new information likely stems from an Internet report Thursday that Raiders head coach Tom Cable allegedly attacked Hanson during a meeting that included several other assistant coaches. Nationalfootballpost.com reported that Cable allegedly knocked Hanson off a chair and onto the floor during the meeting, choking the assistant coach and saying: "I am going to kill you! I am going to kill you!"
The Napa Police Department did not release a report, saying the matter was ongoing. Also, the Napa County District Attorney's office said it had not received a police report and thus was not investigating the matter.
Calls by The Bee to Hanson's attorney, John McGuinn of San Francisco, were not returned.
The Napa Police Department initially interviewed Hanson on Aug. 6, when he sought medical attention in a Napa hospital. He refused to file charges or say who was responsible.
"Due to a lack of information provided to the police department, the case was closed," the police said in its statement Friday.
After his team had its final walkthrough Friday in preparation for tonight's exhibition game against the 49ers at Candlestick Park, Cable seemed genuinely taken aback by the news of the reopened investigation and appeared crestfallen.
Asked if he had any comment, Cable said softly, "I don't."
Then, seconds later, when asked to name his starting linebackers for tonight's game, Cable seemed distracted.
"Um … you caught me off guard here with that one," Cable said before answering, "Thomas Howard, Kirk Morrison and Jon Alston."
