Police searching a home next door to where they say Jaycee Lee Dugard was held captive for 18 years discovered a bone fragment, but authorities said they did not yet know if it was human.
The small bone fragment was found Sunday on rental property next door to where alleged Dugard kidnapper Phillip Garrido lived outside Antioch, prompting officials to bring in five cadaver dogs Monday to continue the search effort.
"Right now, we are looking at specific areas," said Jimmy Lee, spokesman for the Contra Costa County sheriff.
Lee said it could take weeks before the bone is identified as animal or human. Searches have been taking place on the property because Garrido may have lived there for a time as well as in his own home.
"It looks like he lived in a shed there," Lee said.
By late Monday afternoon, the crime scene tape around both houses was being removed. FBI, Pittsburg police and Contra Costa sheriff's officials conducted the searches to determine if there is any evidence linking Garrido, a 58-year-old convicted rapist and kidnapper, to other Bay Area crimes.
