The bone fragment found in a search of the backyard next door to Phillip Garrido's Antioch-area home is likely human, but more testing is needed to determine its origin and it may come from an old American Indian burial site, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.
Garrido, a 58-year-old convicted rapist, was arrested last month as a suspect in the 1991 abduction of then-11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard. In the weeks since, law enforcement agencies have investigated his possible connection to other crimes. Among those agencies is the Pittsburg Police Department, which searched for evidence linking Garrido to a series of killings of young women in the late 1990s.
The bone fragment was found a week ago in the yard next to Garrido's home, which was searched because he had access to the property. Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said Tuesday that it "is probably human."
Lee said the department would ask the state to try to develop a DNA profile from the fragment. He said it's not unusual to find American Indian remains in the county.
