FRESNO, Calif. — The Fresno County Coroner's Office announced Tuesday that human bones found in July west of Fresno are the missing body parts of a Sanger mother of two who was found slain more than a year earlier.
The body of Mary Padilla, 27, was found May 17, 2008 in the backyard of a home on the 5500 block of West Shields Avenue. Absent were her head, hands and feet.
On July 22, the skeletal remains of human hands, feet and parts of a skull were found in a garment bag by someone working on the property at 4601 N. Jameson Ave. west of Fresno. DNA tests confirmed they were Padilla's bones, the Coroner's Office said Tuesday.
Kelly Wiefel, a deputy coroner, said the bones were found under a semi-trailer that hadn't been used in at least a few months.
She said she wasn't sure who had found the bones.
"They were walking through the fields and noticed this bag beneath a semi-trailer and they looked inside of it and could see a skull," Wiefel said.
