ANTIOCH — Police searching Phillip Garrido's home and property in Antioch discovered more bone fragments Monday but said they appeared to be too old to be connected to any of the cases authorities are trying to link to the convicted rapist and kidnapper.
Authorities used a dog trained to detect the scent of human remains as well as ground-penetrating radar that can search up to 25 feet below the surface. But hopes appeared to be dwindling that searchers would discover anything related to the disappearances of two Bay Area girls in the late 1980s.
"The goal is to search this property as thoroughly as possible," said Lt. Chris Orrey of the Hayward Police Department, which is investigating the 1988 abduction of 9-year-old Michaela Joy Garecht.
"Hope is a difficult thing to talk about at this point."
Michaela's mother, Sharon Murch, came to the search site again Monday to present authorities who have been working in blazing temperatures a handmade thank-you note.
"I'm just hoping someone will give us the answers we need to end this," Murch said.
The search is expected to resume today and may be wrapped up by the end of the day if no new evidence is detected.
