Tulare County Superior Court jury today found Nancy Ortiz, the woman accused of abandoning three newborn infants in her Orosi neighborhood, guilty of second-degree murder for one baby's death.
Ortiz, 24, testified that she abandoned two newborns in 2005 and 2006, but they were discovered alive by neighbors and are now in foster care. A third infant died of exposure after she was left in a pickup bed in December 2006.
The mystery of the abandoned newborns in Orosi stumped authorities and shocked residents. A tip led authorities to Ortiz. DNA evidence linked her to all three babies, and she was arrested in July 2007.
