Hockey game brawl between fathers sends one to hospital

Hudson Sangree - Sacramento Bee

October 22, 2009 01:16 PM

A brutal confrontation between two fathers after a girls' field hockey match on Monday in Chico left Davis Senior High School players, coaches and parents on edge Wednesday.

Police officers and school officials stood on the sidelines at Nugget Fields in Davis as the Blue Devils varsity and junior varsity field hockey teams took on visitors from Yuba City.

Officials said the goal was to reassure players and parents and make sure there was no repeat of Monday's incident.

That was when two men – one of them the junior varsity coach's father and the other the father of a player – ended up in an fight that put one man in the hospital overnight, Chico police said.

Sgt. Rob Merrifield said it was unclear from witnesses who started the fight.

Some said it was the player's father, whose name has not been disclosed, Merrifield said.

Others said it was the father of junior varsity coach Meryl Craig, whom family members identified as Steven Craig.

Police were called at 4:54 p.m. to a parking lot outside Chico High School, Merrifield said. When officers arrived, they found one man injured and another who identified himself as having been involved.
