PLACERVILLE, Calif. -- The court hearing for Phillip and Nancy Garrido lasted only two minutes Thursday but turned into a media circus as Jaycee Lee Dugard's purported biological father and Garrido's 1976 rape victim both showed up in court.
The hearing, which started 45 minutes late as attorneys met in chambers with the judge to discuss discovery issues, was set back to Dec. 11.
But there was plenty of drama as Katie Callaway, the woman Garrido kidnapped and raped during a horrifying night inside a Reno storage unit in 1976, sat in the front row staring at her attacker. In 1977, Garrido was convicted in federal court of kidnapping Callaway and in Nevada's Washoe Superior Court of rape.
"It was intensely emotional," Callaway said today. "I about broke down. It is the same old feeling from 32 years ago."
Callaway, who was accompanied by her husband, Jim Hall, said she felt it was important to be present and that she hopes to help ensure that Garrido is never free again.
She said she made certain to make eye contact with Garrido, who was outfitted in a red jail jumpsuit and seated in the jury box inside an El Dorado County Superior Courtroom.
"He did, he looked right at me, and I just glared right back," she said.
"It was obviously emotional," her husband said.
Also present was Ken Slayton, the 63-year-old Riverside County man who claims to be Jaycee Dugard's biological father. Slayton was accompanied by prominent Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred, who said she was hoping to arrange for her client to meet Dugard.
Slayton, who has never met Dugard and did not know of her existence until after she was kidnapped in 1991 and the FBI contacted him, said seeing Garrido in court made him angry.
"I just wanted to rip his face off," Slayton said. "I'm old-school. . . . He's just a sack of garbage."
