Ex-NFL and 'Dancing' star Taylor jailed after Miami crash

Jennifer Lebovitch - Miami Herald

November 10, 2009 08:36 PM

Former New York Giants great and "Dancing With the Stars" contestant Lawrence Taylor was arrested Sunday night on charges of leaving the scene of a crash in Miami-Dade County, according to jail records.

Taylor, 50, was booked into jail and released on $500 bond.

The crash happened about 6:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway at Northwest 103rd Street, authorities said.

The crash tore off the front right tire on Taylor's 2009 Cadillac Escalade, and he drove about two miles on the axle before stopping, authorities said.

"There was significant damage to his car," said Lt. James Durden of the Florida Highway Patrol.

When police spotted him, he was standing outside the SUV talking on his cellphone. He told police that he thought he had hit a guardrail.

According to Durden, here's what happened:

A 1984 Ford van was in the right, northbound lane of the Palmetto near Northwest 103rd Street. Taylor might have been trying to change lanes when his SUV hit the van.

Taylor continued on. No one was injured.

Officers saw Taylor's SUV off the Palmetto Expressway near Northwest 122nd Street.

Taylor didn't show any signs of impairment and wasn't given a sobriety test, Durden said.

Taylor was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash. He was also cited for careless driving, Durden said.
