Charlotte couple charged with selling moonshine at day care

Steve Lyttle - Charlotte Observer

December 07, 2009 03:56 PM

A Charlotte couple has been arrested for selling moonshine from a day-care center operated by the wife, state law enforcement agents say.

Young children were in the center while the moonshine was being sold, agents also say.

N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement agents say they arrested Gwendolyn Brown Johnson, 57, and her husband, Artis Lejuine Johnson, 64, last Friday at Parkview Community Center, a day-care center on Pryor Street, off Tuckaseegee Road.

Also arrested, agents say, was a Catawba County man who was accused by authorities of supplying the liquor.

ALE agents say Gwendolyn Johnson is listed as chief executive officer of Parkview Community Center. She and her husband were charged with possession of non-tax-paid liquor and selling non-tax-paid liquor. They also were charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Ervin Preston Finger, 82, of Claremont, was charged with selling non-tax-paid liquor and possession of non-tax-paid liquor, the ALE says. Agents say Finger supplied moonshine being sold at the day-care center.
