Report in ex-Missouri House speaker's case says woman was battered for hours

Dave Helling - The Kansas City Star

December 11, 2009 07:17 AM

The initial Sikeston, Mo., police report behind the assault charge against former Missouri House speaker Rod Jetton indicates an hours-long battering that left a woman bruised from jaw to ankle.

Two days after the alleged attack in November, an investigative report said, the woman still showed signs of a beating: numerous contusions on her torso and thighs, slap marks, and the impressions of a hand on her face and neck.

"(The victim) stated during the whole incident, she was scared for her life," the Sikeston public safety officer wrote. "She stated she woke up on 11/16/2009 early in the morning and was unable to move" because the pain across her body was so severe.

Jetton's lawyer did not respond to an e-mail Thursday but has issued a statement that the allegations are false.

Some differences show up between the alleged victim's initial statements to police and the affidavit filed Monday with the felony charge. The affidavit is based on the police report but other information or evidence as well.

In the affidavit filed Monday, prosecutors said Jetton and the woman agreed on using "green balloons" as a "safe word" — sometimes used in cases of rough sex to keep things from getting out of control.

But the officer's interview of the alleged victim makes no mention of her talking with Jetton about a safe word during their evening together Nov. 15. The woman mentioned "green balloons" only as what Jetton allegedly said to her the next morning, after the alleged assault.

That same affidavit also said Jetton and the alleged victim discussed over the telephone Nov. 15 having sexual relations that day. But the police report noted that the woman told police that Jetton, whom she had known for years but not seen recently, communicated with her in a text message that he merely wanted to "stop by" her residence. Her iPhone was taken as evidence, according to the report.
