One image of David Edward Crable that sticks in Brooke Dodson's mind is seeing him and his brother Jason inside their open garage across the street drinking beer, arguing, tossing beer bottles at each other and fighting.
It was constant, she said.
So were the police cars that seemed to roar once a month or more into their quiet, well-tended subdivision in Spanaway after the Crables moved there four years ago.
What emerges from talking with neighbors and the Crables' numerous requests for restraining orders is a family in crisis for a long time, where violence, abusive behavior and excessive drinking were the norm.
David Crable, 35, who was shot dead Monday night after wounding two Pierce County sheriff's deputies in a gunfight near Eatonville, also liked guns and enjoyed showing them off. He and Edward Jason Crable, 32, both liked firecrackers and blew them up all year long, Dodson said.
Jacob Barrett, 22, who moved in next door to David Crable six months ago, said Crable liked to show him his guns, especially a semi-automatic assault rifle. Barrett said David Crable gave him a broken Airsoft rifle that looked just like the real one.
"He seemed real proud of the gun," he said.
They shared beers once in awhile, but Barrett said there was something strange about David Crable. "He seemed chemically unbalanced," he said. "He was agitated and all over the place."
