Federal prosecutors said Thursday that they executed search warrants on Chevron Corp. properties in Alaska this week.
The searches happened Tuesday and Wednesday, said federal Department of Justice spokesman Andrew Ames.
"Beyond that information, we have no comment," said Ames, based in Washington, D.C.
Judges and magistrates authorize search warrants only during criminal investigations.
Chevron Corp. said the federal Environmental Protection Agency is investigating air emissions at two of its Cook Inlet properties operated by California-based Unocal.
The investigation is focusing on the Trading Bay production facility and the Granite Point tank farm, said Mickey Driver, a Houston-based spokesman for Chevron, which owns Unocal.
The two properties, located on the western shore of Cook Inlet, take production from offshore oil platforms in Cook Inlet and separate the water, natural gas and oil that come up from wells. The oil is shipped to the Tesoro refinery in Nikiski.
