Alaska man, under restraining order, charged with stabbing wife

Kyle Hopkins - Anchorage Daily News

February 01, 2010 04:39 PM

A 28-year-old Anchorage man was charged with attempted murder Sunday after police say he stabbed and cut his wife more than 15 times on her body, face and head.

The attack came early Saturday at the Extended Stay Deluxe, a Midtown hotel.

The husband, Saliym Cureton, called 911 himself, the charges say. He told police his wife had cheated on him, that he had a knife in his hands, and that if they came in the room, "she's dead," according police and charging documents.

After asking the courts for multiple domestic violence restraining orders against Cureton over the past four years, Dorean Cureton had recently filed for divorce, according to friends and court records.

"They're split up. She had a protective order against him to not come around," said Carlos Soto, who is the father of Dorean's two sons and was watching the boys the morning of the stabbing.

Dorean underwent surgery Saturday, according to police. She remained in the intensive care unit of a local hospital Sunday but is expected to survive, Soto said.

Saliym Cureton, who has a daughter with Dorean, has not entered a plea but in an interview with police denied stabbing his wife, according to the charges against him.

Police say they found a knife, bent and broken, in the hotel bathroom.
