The software engineer suspected of crashing his small plane into a federal building in Austin, Texas, ran a business in the Sacramento region for several years and registered an airplane here, government records show.
Law enforcement officials have identified the pilot as Joseph Stack, who ran a software development firm in Austin called Embedded Art.
Government records indicate Stack ran a company called Software Systems Service Corporation in the Placer County town of Lincoln in the late 1990s. The business was incorporated in 1995, and a web site attributed to Stack by The Smoking Gun indicates he moved to Austin five years later.
The Federal Aviation Administration says Stack registered a Piper aircraft in Lincoln in 1998. It appears to be the same aircraft involved in the crash.
Stack maintained a postal box in Lincoln at PJ's Mail and Parcel, a private mail center.
Owner Pauline Rowan said she remembered him, but did not know him well.
"(Customers) will come in and say 'Hi.' It wasn't like we had long chats," Rowan said. "We knew he moved to Texas. We knew he had a plane."
