Woman who got 3 years for sex with boy out after 6 months

Idaho Statesman

February 23, 2010 05:14 PM

BOISE — Esmeralda Ahumada was sentenced in August to serve at least three, and up to seven, years in prison after pleading guilty to felony injury to a child.

But 3rd District Judge Renae Hoff retained jurisdiction for six months so she could reconsider whether Ahumada, 21, should serve out that sentence or be released on probation.

On Tuesday, after reviewing the recommendation of specialists who have been treating and evaluating Ahumada, Hoff ordered seven years of probation and community-based treatment.

Ahumada has admitted repeated sexual contact with her roommate’s 12-year-old son at their Notus home in fall 2008 while the roommate was in the hospital. The defense focused on her emotional and mental health problems and history of being sexually abused throughout her childhood. The prosecution stressed the seriousness of the crime and the impact on the boy.

In August, Hoff ordered Ahumada to have no contact with her young victim and no unsupervised contact with any minors.
