Update: Sheriff's detective, suspect dead in Fresno Shooting

FRESNO, Calif. — As many as four people were taken to a Fresno hospital Thursday after a holed-up arson suspect shot at deputies and a fire investigator serving an arrest warrant.

One of the wounded was a Fresno County sheriff's deputy was in critical condition after being shot in the side under his armpit. A Reedley police officer also was taken to the hospital in critical condition with a wound to the head, officials said.

A third officer, a sheriff's deputy had a gunshot wound to the shoulder. His condition was not known.

A fourth ambulance transported an unknown person with wounds to the hospital.

At Community Regional Medical Center, where the injured officers were taken, the emergency room is on lockdown. Sheriff's deputies outside were emotional, but declined to talk.

According to law enforcement radio communications, the incident began when a suspect with a high-powered rifle opened fire on two deputies serving a warrant.

A witness, Bret McArron, who was doing construction in the area, said he believed officers fired about 150-200 rounds into a mobile home, then chase a man behind a barn. At that point, he was told to leave the area.

A man who said he was at the single grocery store in the area said he saw scroes of officers heading into the area. An armored vehicle was seen going to the scene.

A California Highway Patrol plane is being called in to assist.
