EAST ST. LOUIS -- An East St. Louis police officer pleaded guilty Tuesday to violating the civil rights of a handcuffed suspect he punched in the mouth.
Antonio McWherter, 47, of Belleville, faces up to a year in prison and a fine up to $100,000 when he is sentenced later on charge, a federal crime.
As part of a plea agreement, McWherter agreed to immediately resign from the East St. Louis Police Department and cannot seek employment in law enforcement or the military.
