Off-duty Fort Worth cop drives pickup truck into house

Deanna Boyd - Fort Worth Star-Telegram

April 24, 2010 07:10 PM

FORT WORTH — An off-duty Fort Worth police officer suspected of driving drunk crashed his pickup into a home early Friday, knocking a man and woman from their bed.

Officer Michael L. Buchanan, 28, was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital after the 1:30 a.m. wreck, and a sample of his blood was drawn for alcohol testing. He was booked into jail on suspicion of intoxication assault and was later released on $5,000 bail.

Police say they will seek a charge of intoxication assault against Buchanan, who has been with the department since December 2004, if the tests reveal that his blood-alcohol content was 0.08 or higher.

An internal investigation is also under way that officials say could lead to Buchanan's firing.

Craig Driskell, an attorney with the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, cautioned Friday that blood-alcohol-test results are still pending.

"I'll remind everybody that you're innocent until proven guilty," said Driskell, who is representing Buchanan in the administrative investigation. "This officer is innocent until proven guilty."
