FORT WORTH — The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a $2 million settlement with the family of a man killed by police with a Taser.
Michael Patrick Jacobs died last year after being shocked with a Taser for 54 seconds. The Tarrant County medical examiner's office ruled the death a homicide and Jacobs' family sued, alleging his civil rights had been violated.
The city did not admit liability, but the settlement was far higher than any previous payments the city has made involving wrongful deaths.
"Hopefully with this settlement, which will avoid a long trial, we as a city can begin the process of reconciliation and dialogue," Councilwoman Kathleen Hicks said.
