ALBERS — A "code red" emergency that shut down a grade school and caused squad cars from five police departments to roll began when a 14-year-old boy "flipped off" his classroom teacher and ran out of the school, according to the superintendent.
After the incident last week, Albers Elementary School District 63 Superintendent Sharon Harms sent a letter to Jeremy Horner's parents stating he was suspended and banned from his eighth-grade graduation on Thursday night for "chronic misbehavior." The couple have appealed and will present their side to the school board tonight.
Harms said that about 11 a.m. May 11, Jeremy violated regulations by leaving detention and bolting out of the school's front door, causing widespread "student unrest," necessitating a lockdown and calls to police.
