EAST ST. LOUIS — A 25-year-old Cahokia woman ran from motorist to motorist on eastbound Interstate 64 Sunday afternoon and pleaded with them to save her life.
But police say her boyfriend fatally shot her in the head, then turned the gun on himself.
Haaneyfan McDonald and his friend Scott Cross were driving home to East St. Louis at about 2 p.m. after a church service in Missouri. McDonald said Cross had slowed his minivan in the eastbound lanes of the highway, just east of the Poplar Street Bridge and near East St. Louis City Hall, because he thought the woman had been in an accident. But then the men noticed that someone was running after her with a gun in his hands. Finally at Cross' van, she knocked on the window frantically and shouted, "'Oh please help me! Help Me!'" McDonald said.
As Cross pulled over, McDonald said, a man pulled a gun from his pants and shot her. After grabbing her shirt collar and hair, he shot her a second time in the head, before turning the gun on himself. McDonald saw the gun fall to the ground.
