Weston Kennedy had the black Monte Carlo SS back on the highway when the first scream filled the car.
It was around midnight. The purse the teens from Lindsborg, Kan., had just found on the side of the road? Fat with cash, baby — $7,700 in crisp Benjamins.
At that point, they knew nothing about the 60-year-old woman who had left the purse on top of her car, or that the money was for a memorial for her dead husband.
The only thing the teenagers knew in that dark car going down Interstate 135 was that finding $7,700 in the middle of the night sure was exciting. They had all just graduated from Smoky Valley High School in Lindsborg.
Ah, to be 18, out of school and loaded.
So what did they do with the money? They drove to the Lindsborg Police Station and turned it in.
