ARLINGTON — The Fox television show The Good Guys doesn't pretend to be a realistic portrayal of crime fighting.
But in at least one instance, the Dallas-filmed show that gives a playful nod to '70s cop shows like Starsky and Hutch was ahead of its time.
In a recent episode, two undercover cops stage a meeting with a prostitute escort at a run-down motel. On the show, the scene takes place in Dallas, but it was filmed at Arlington's Caravan Motel.
In real life, Arlington is so concerned about prostitution that it is considering creating an exclusion zone along that stretch of Division Street and around the rest of the entertainment district to keep out illicit sexual activity.
Arlington officials say it would be the first such zone in Texas and should be in place in time for the Super Bowl in February, but they say that the game would not be the reason for the ordinance.
In other cities, exclusion zones have had varying results. Officials in Reno, Nev., and Wichita, Kan., say they have helped control prostitution but are not a cure-all. The zones must be used with other crime-fighting tools to be effective, the officials say.
They also say the zones may simply have pushed some prostitutes into other areas.
Even Arlington Councilman Mel LeBlanc, who represents the entertainment district, wonders whether prostitution is really a problem.
