A Mendenhall High School football player claims in a lawsuit that he was kicked off the football team for wearing pink cleats, which his great-grandmother bought him to honor female family members who have struggled with breast cancer, in line with the National Football League’s own campaign to increase awareness of the disease.
Mendenall High Principal John James said Friday that he had read the lawsuit, but is limited in what he can say. “All I can tell you is there’s a lot more to it than just that,” James said. “There’s just a lot more to it than that.”
Kicker Coy Sheppard played in pink cleats Oct. 8 in a game against Richland High School, says the lawsuit, filed Thursday in Chancery Court against Mendehall High School, the Simpson County School Board and Coach Chris Peterson.
“At halftime Coach (Chris) Peterson made it clear that he did not approve of Coy’s new cleats,” the lawsuit says.
