Eduardo Zamora Jr. sat upright and looked straight ahead Monday while the pictures flashed on the courtroom screen behind him and told a tale of torture.
In the darkened courtroom, Zamora kept his shaven head still while the prosecutor clicked through coroner's photographs of a dead boy beaten purple. His face, head, chest, back, arms, legs, his hands, his feet – purple.
Zamora didn't flinch. He didn't react. He didn't turn around from his seat at the defense table to see the reddish-blue hue that covered most of Braeden James Gardner's 3-foot-7 frame.
The bruises got there in a fatal beating that prosecutors say Zamora showered on the 5-year-old boy. They say Zamora, 32, lost it over a bathroom accident possibly brought on by his administering to Braeden too much of a drug used to control the boy's ADHD symptoms.
Whether he couldn't or wouldn't look at the pictures – displayed during opening statements in his murder trial Monday – the result was what investigators termed a killing for the ages
