An Arlington man was fatally shot Sunday night outside Tyler after a husband saw his wife embrace him, Smith County sheriff's investigators said.
Deputies found Chad Otis Jones, 39, dead outside a residence on County Road 21. A woman there told investigators that her husband, Ricky Jay Reynolds, 45, had shot Jones and fled, sheriff's Lt. Tony Dana said.
According to witnesses, Jones was in financial trouble, and the Reynoldses let him stay next door in the house owned by the wife's brother, who had recently died, Dana said. On Sunday night, Reynolds' wife went to the house to sort through her brother's possessions, and she and Jones talked about their recent troubles, Dana said. The wife said that as a gesture of comfort, she hugged Jones and kissed him on the cheek, Dana said.
