former U.S. Postal Service employee in Columbus has been indicted on federal charges he stole mail on at least 15 occasions by targeting “brightly colored envelopes” he handled as a temporary contract worker.
Jared O. Jones faces one count of theft of mail by a postal employee.
Prosecutors claim Jones was observed opening mail “on at least 15 occasions, either by the postal inspectors, surveillance equipment or both,” said Sue McKinney, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Middle District of Georgia.
“This person was only opening the brightly colored envelopes that appeared to be birthday cards that might contain cash, checks or gift cards,” McKinney said.
McKinney said it would be “impossible to calculate” the impact of the theft “because there’s no way of knowing how many times he stole mail and what the contents were when he did.”
Jones, who worked as a short-term “casual employee,” has been terminated from the main post office in Columbus, prosecutors said.
