For the second time this holiday season, the Salvation Army soup kitchen of Columbus was the victim of a theft after someone cut the lock on an outdoor freezer Friday night and stole about $250 worth of frozen turkey and chicken, authorities said.
“We were having roast turkeys and they took them,” said Mac Peterson, a full-time cook and assistant manager at the shelter. “Anytime something’s stolen it hurts our whole organization, but we’re going to provide for the guys.”
Peterson said the shelter still managed to serve a Christmas Eve meal to 93 people, thanks in part to some sliced turkey that was donated at the last minute.
According to a police report, Peterson reported the theft after arriving at the shelter about 5 a.m. Friday. Taken from the freezer were three 15 pound turkeys, 40 pounds of frozen chicken legs and 40 pounds of chicken wings.
