SACRAMENTO — Jurors finished eight days of volatile deliberations Friday by telling the judge they couldn't reach a verdict on the second defendant in a fatal shooting at an Elk Grove party two years ago.
Sacramento Superior Court Judge Greta Curtis Fall then declared a mistrial in the case of Tamara Nicole Bassett. Just as quickly, Deputy District Attorney Sheri Greco announced her office would retry Bassett on murder and four other counts in the April 18, 2009, shooting that killed 25-year-old Alison Joelle Freeseha and left three men seriously injured.
The same jury earlier in the week returned a first-degree murder conviction against Bassett's co-defendant and boyfriend, Raymond Thomas Vigel, 21. The panel also found Vigel guilty of attempted murder and on a third count of shooting into an inhabited dwelling, but it remained deadlocked on two other attempted murder counts against him.
Judge Fall set Vigel's sentencing date for Feb. 4 and ordered a March 1 date on the retrial.
