N.C. woman charged in decades-old child abduction case

Joseph Neff - The (Raleigh) News & Observer

January 24, 2011 07:22 AM

A Raleigh woman suspected of abducting an infant from a New York hospital more than two decades ago is scheduled to appear in court today on federal kidnapping charges.

Ann Pettway, 49, on Sunday surrendered at an FBI office in Bridgeport, Conn., said Pam Walker, a spokeswoman for the N.C. Department of Correction.

Pettway had been wanted on probation-violation charges in Wake County.

But federal investigators wanted to talk with her about the abduction of Carlina Renae White, who was 19 days old when she disappeared from Harlem Hospital in 1987.

According to several published reports, Carlina had been taken to Bridgeport, where she was raised as Nejdra Nance.

She had long harbored doubts about Pettway being her birth mother, and as an adult living in Atlanta, White called the Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Center investigators showed her a baby photo of Carlina White from their archives, which bore a strong resemblance to photos of herself as a baby taken by her Connecticut family.

Carlina White was reunited with her birth mother, Joy White, last week after DNA tests confirmed her identity.

Neither could be reached for comment Sunday. Pettway, who was in custody, also was unreachable. She was to appear in federal court in New York today to face kidnapping charges, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said.
