EL PASO, Texas -- Sparring intensified Tuesday between Luis Posada Carriles’s lead defense attorney and former New York Times writer Ann Louise Bardach over whether she asked the Cuban exile militant for permission to tape him for an interview 13 years ago and whether she later erased a brief portion of one interview tape.
Bardach interviewed Posada in Aruba in June 1998 and a month later, on July 12, The New York Times published an article by Bardach and co-author Larry Rohter quoting Posada as claiming credit for bombings at Cuban tourist sites in 1997 that killed an Italian tourist.
Bardach’s fifth day on the stands marked her third day of intense cross-examination by Arturo V. Hernandez, Posada’s lead defense attorney.
Excerpts of the taped interview are now a key piece of evidence in the perjury trial against Posada.
