N. Carolina man is reported missing in D.C.

Steve Lyttle - Charlotte Observer

May 28, 2011 07:05 PM

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Matthews, N.C., man working with a church-based outreach group in the District of Columbia is missing and is the subject of a widening manhunt.

Matthew Hill, 26, was last seen Tuesday morning in the northwest part of the District. His debit card was used twice after that, and police say his cell phone is shut off.

Hill works with Campus Outreach DC, sponsored by Capital Hill Baptist Church. The organization provides tutoring and Christian-based support for college students in the Washington area, and police say Hill had just dropped off a student he was tutoring at George Washington University when he was last seen.

That was about 10:30 a.m., in the Chinatown area of D.C., near 9th and H streets.

According to police reports, his debit card was used a short time later at a D.C. parking lot and then around noon at a gas station in suburban Arlington, Va. Hill's car also is missing.

Friends have started a Facebook page in support, and Washington TV station WTTG is reporting that Hill's father and brother have flown from the Charlotte area to Washington to meet with the FBI.

Hill is an Elon University graduate. He is described as being 6 feet 1 and 170 to 175 pounds, with light brown hair and brown eyes. He has scars on a shoulder and knee from surgeries. He was driving a black 1996 Honda Civic, with D.C. tags DT 2747.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call police at 202-727-9099.
