A 6-foot bronze statue of a boy commanded respect and emulation from thousands of Boy Scouts coming in and out of the Creighton Scout Service Center for a dozen years.
Over the weekend, somebody managed to topple the statue and drag it across the concrete walkway before presumably driving off with it.
“I can’t imagine how they lifted the thing,” Tim Garber, Scout executive for Pacific Harbors Council Boy Scouts of America, said Monday. “That Scout’s been standing guard for 12 years, and it all fell by the wayside this weekend.”
A fundraising campaign brought the statue to Tacoma when the Boy Scout council’s headquarters opened in 1999. It paid $13,500 to the Cradle of Liberty Council, Boy Scouts of America back then.
It would cost $16,000, without shipping, to replace the statue, said Catherine Calhoun, Pacific Harbors Council office manager.
