An attorney who recently joined Jerry Sandusky’s legal defense team speculated in an interview with a Harrisburg-area television station that Sandusky might have showered with boys to teach them personal hygiene, and several hours later issued a news release clarifying his statement.
Karl Rominger, of the firm Rominger and Associates of Carlisle, was interviewed by reporters with WHTM, an ABC affiliate in Harrisburg, and was asked about the allegations that Sandusky showered with young boys.
He noted that his college cross-country coach showered with his team, then went on: “Teaching a person to shower at the age of 12 to 14 may sound strange to some people, but actually people who work with troubled youth will tell you there are a lot of juvenile delinquents and people who are dependent who have to be taught basic life skills, like how to put soap on their body.
He later issued a statement saying Sandusky denies that any sexual touching or inappropriate touching ever happened in the showers, and that statement in the WHTM interview had been taken out of context in some media accounts.
“Therefore, I would like to clarify that I am not suggesting that this is what happened in this case,” he wrote, “but was answering questions about possible motivations an individual might have for an adult to shower with a juvenile.”
